Igor Jesus Scores a Brace as The Reds Conclude European Campaign with Win over Ferencvaros

Forest striker in action
Igor Jesus has now notched eleven strikes in every tournament for Nottingham Forest this season.

Match Summary

  • The home side were previously qualified to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos own goal gives hosts a first-half lead.
  • The striker's fifth goal in Europe puts Forest in control.
  • Forward adds a third with a clinical effort in the second half.
  • James McAtee caps a great display with a penalty.

Igor Jesus found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side concluded the group stage of the Europa League with a comfortable triumph against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

Forest had previously guaranteed a berth in the knockout round play-offs and went into this fixture with a slim possibility of reaching the top eight, although they needed other matches to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this assured display will give Forest fans confidence that their team can navigate the home-and-away tie to reach the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the post with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – who are managed by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

Forest broke the deadlock in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by the defender and added a second shortly after – the striker firing an effort in at the far post for his tenth strike of the campaign.

Jesus' 11th came early in the second half when he made a perfectly-timed run to break clear of the backline and then place a shot beyond the goalkeeper.

That goal killed off the visitors' aspirations of mounting a recovery and instead the hosts scored again when the excellent James McAtee converted a spot-kick after a foul by the hapless Bence Otvos inside the box on the winger.

Europe's secondary club competition knockout phase play-off draw is scheduled on the final Friday of January (12:00 GMT), where Forest might face either Fenerbahce or the Greek club.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these guys to do well as a unit, the whole squad," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a good one."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Watches On

Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in Europe this term with half of his eleven strikes coming in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has got three goals in his previous two outings and the prospect of a challenge for his position in the forward line could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was recently signed on loan and he was watching this match from the stands.

That may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, delivering two excellent finishes and overall being a menace to the visitors' defence with his pace and runs.

The forward was not the only one in catching the eye, with McAtee turning in his finest display in a Forest jersey since signing from the champions last summer, while the Swiss international also performed well.

Such positive showings will give the club some renewed optimism as they switch focus to increasing the gap from the Premier League relegation zone when they welcome their London rivals on the weekend.

"The minimum requirement is a reaction," added the manager.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their dedication or integrity. It is just go and show your quality.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan was super sharp. Igor got another two and these are positive indicators."
