Revelers are advised to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve. Celebratory Plans Continue Despite Alerts Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are planned to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland. "An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the national forecaster. Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies Across the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. The mercury are due to be low, so additional clothing essential, according to forecasters. In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster. Broad Advisories for Friday Moving into Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England. Transport is expected to be impacted. Travelers are advised to leave additional time for travel on the road. Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport. Readings Set to Fall Even More With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to affect the north of the country. Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills. Health Warnings Issued At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C. The health agency said this signified the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over. The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is utterly paramount.
