The pace bowler added to the fitness woes of the England squad after leaving the playing area during Saturday's play of the fourth Ashes Test versus the Australians. The pace bowler pulled up with his left hamstring immediately following a delivery of the fourth over during the morning session. The England team indicated the 27-year-old had experienced "tightness" and required time off the field to undergo evaluation "in the coming hours". The concluding match of the tour beginning on 4 January starts this coming Sunday. The visitors have previously lost strike bowlers Mark Wood with a knee problem and Jofra Archer with an abdominal strain on this Ashes tour. Matthew Fisher was called up as cover for Wood. Atkinson struggled during the first two matches, claiming a mere three wickets. He was left out of the third Test, before being recalled for the fourth Test as Archer's replacement. Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, taking two wickets in Australia's first innings, then making 28 while batting as one of just three England players who passed ten runs. Post a single over in Australia's second innings, he returned the next day and dismissed the nightwatchman taken by the wicketkeeper. However, at the end of his spell, he delivered a slower ball to the batsman and suddenly grabbed his left hamstring. Atkinson was brought back for the Melbourne match having missed the Adelaide game.
