The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.

Although not quite at the identical stature as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office.

“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”

This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.

The swine, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.

A New Life

This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.

“It captures the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”

Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
